On the banks of the river Gautama Ganga  
there is a cave which is the door to liberation.     
Bathe in its waves and wash away your sins,      
return always to take shelter at His feet.     

Under a pipul tree a hermitage is built,      
Shiva in a human body has a dhuni there.  
Come and put the sacred ashes on your forehead.

Normally His darshan is difficult to obtain,
yet He is very easily pleased:          
all you need to do is fill your mind with Shiva’s image.

You ate the half-eaten fruit of Shabari
and have described the sweet taste in countless ways.       

You discarded the choice offerings of Dhuryodhana         
and went to poor Vidura’s house to eat vegetables.

Out of love you drove Paratha’s2 chariot,   
forgetting, that You are a divine being.       

Out of Love You did service to the king,    
You did a barbers service.    

Yudisthira performed the rajasu-yajna        
and then cleaned the eating-vessels, like a servant.

Your Love at Vindraban was such,  
that You made the gopis dance with You.   

I, Sura Das, am only a wretched man,       
unable to describe Your greatness.
