I live in the centre of a desert surrounded by ancient mountains, now bare and peeling in the sun, the rivers are all red sand. Hidden away in caves and on overhanging rock faces are paintings that date back twenty thousand years. The land is empty now, all the footprints have been worn away, the voices of the children no longer echo through the valleys and watercourses, the sound of ancient chants that used to haunt the stars and walk on the night clouds; are now whisked away to some other horizon.

 

I ask how many of you are comfortable sitting on the ground. Lying in the earth, sleeping on the very mother Earth that sustains us, knowing all that grows around you, having full knowledge of the medicines that nature provides, recognizing every scratch in the red sand every star in the sky and every story attached to it, so that you may better know your own place and where you fit in.

 

I think we have become scared of nature, so we build fences of concrete around us to keep out nature; the very thing we were born naked into, the aboriginal people of Australia could have taught us how to be naked in the world again and perhaps if we were naked we would learn to love each other again and that divine love of the very ground we stand on would return.
