Future
plans for
Bhole Baba Ayurvedic Hospital, Chilia Naula, Ranikhet
(first draft)

The Context
Bhole Baba Ayurvedic Hospital is a unique institution,
nestled in the beautiful Himalayan hills of Kumaon at Chilia Naula, Ranikhet.
It is an ideal place for people seeking peace and solitude from the vagaries
of complex day to day life. Standing on the Hospital site, one could see the
snow capped mountains of the gigantic Himalayan range, the green valleys at
the foothills, a beautiful sunrise in the morning and the forests of tall
pine and deodar trees on the meandering hill slopes of Ranikhet.
The Ayurvedic Hospital is a place where people from all
over the world come to heal themselves not only physically but also
spiritually. It is an invitation to the people to come back to the nature.
The existing Ayurvedic Hospital is housed in two separate
buildings: an OPD Block and a Therapy Block. The former is housed in a
separate building, while the latter is functioning from the lower floor of
the existing Allopathic Sri Baba Haidakhan Hospital and Research Centre.
It is proposed that in view of the increasing popularity
of the Ayurvedic Hospital, an additional building facility be provided to
house the expanding therapeutic facilities and in patient rooms.
The
Concept
The new facility must embrace the values of this
institution by providing such spaces to its patients, in which they could
feel closeness to the nature. The Ayurvedic Hospital can be broken down in
three distinctive parts: The OPD Block, The Therapeutic Areas and the In
Patient Living Areas.
The O.P.D. Block is proposed to be housed in the
existing O.P.D. Building. This building will be linked to the proposed
facility through the Central Reception Area.
The Therapeutic Block is proposed to be housed in a new
building next to the O.P.D. Block. This building will house the Central
Reception of the Hospital, All Therapy Rooms, Ayurvedic Operation Theatre,
Meditation/ Yoga Hall, the Dining Hall, Conference Hall, Library, Staff
Rooms, the Utility Rooms and Services. Most of these rooms will have
panoramic views of the Himalayan Range and the green valleys at the
foothills. This block will be the functional centre of the entire Ayurvedic
Hospital. It will provide all Therapeutic facilities to the in patients and
the out patients. It will also house the General Wards and Single and Double
Rooms for the serious patients.
The in patient living areas are proposed to be organized
like a small village community. These will be designed as small cottages,
separated from each other by patches of herbal gardens. Each cottage will
have its own verandah and a small garden. Every cottage will have a good
view of the Himalayas. These cottages will be linked by a central pedestrian
street. The street will be interspersed by herbal gardens on both sides. The
focal point of this “Ayurvedic Community” will be a semi open “havan” area,
where morning prayers will be performed every morning.
By living in such an open environment, the patients will
be able to feel the nature in a more direct manner. They will also feel like
a part of an overall community of like minded people. It will be an
experience which will be in the true spirit of this Institution.
The Architect is Mr. Manish Saini.
